COUNSELING SERVICES

Individual and family sessions are available in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero. The following groups are forming on a continuous basis:

Coping and Support Training Group

Adolescent group for developing healthy coping skills and a support network with the goals of improving school performance, decreasing involvement with drugs, and developing management of moods, such as anxiety, anger and depression (including suicidal ideation).

Utilizes cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) and mindfulness training.

Goals of this group include:

  • improving school performance,
  • decreasing involvement with drugs, and
  • developing management of moods such as anxiety, anger and depression.

Sessions focus on the following:

  • Acquiring healthy coping skills;
  • Developing more social support resources;
  • Identifying personal “triggers”;
  • Building self-esteem;
  • Learning STEPS to deliberate decision-making; and
  • Practicing refusal-skills.

Two groups are available, ages 14-17 and ages 16-19.

$20 per group session.

Groups are limited to 6-8 participants per group.

Anxiety and Stress Management Group

Adolescent group for the treatment of anxiety that focuses on developing awareness of negative thinking patterns and bodily reactions to anxiety, as well as on developing new reactions to anxiety through problem-solving and healthy coping skills.

Utilizes cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) and mindfulness training.

Sessions focus on the following:

  • Increasing flexibility of thoughts;
  • Changing reactions to anxiety;
  • Improving awareness of bodily reactions;
  • Recognizing negative ‘self-talk’;
  • Practicing problem-solving and coping skills; and
  • Using self-evaluation and self-reward.

Two groups are available, ages 14-17 and ages 16-19.

$20 per group session.

Groups are limited to 6-8 participants per group.

Breath and Mindfulness Group

Mindfulness has emerged as powerful tool to help children with a wide range of concerns, from ADHD to anxiety, autism spectrum disorders to depression and stress. This group is intended to improve one’s ability to observe their own thoughts and emotions without immediately reacting to them; cultivate wholesome emotions like gratitude and compassion; and expand the repertoire of stress management skills. Participants learn how to improve relationships, relax and calm themselves, reduce stress, manage reactions and emotions, and increase self-acceptance. 

Integrates themes of mindfulness-based stress reduction.

Sessions focus on the following:

  • Improving understanding of thoughts and feelings;
  • Cultivating compassion and gratitude;
  • Improving attention;
  • Managing distressing emotions;
  • Strengthening stress management skills; and
  • Integrating mindfulness into daily life.

Two groups are available, ages 14-17 and ages 16-19.

$20 per group session.

Groups are limited to 6-8 participants per group.
